Assistance to Firefighters Grant Applications Deadline

The Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program application deadline is 5 p.m. ET on March 13.

 

Grant applicants can visit the FEMA Website to review grant guidance materials.  Applications can be submitted via FEMA GO Portal

 

The Assistance to Firefighters Grants assists first-responder organizations that need to improve capability to respond to fire and emergencies of all types. The program enhances public and firefighter safety and provides direct financial assistance to eligible fire departments, nonaffiliated Emergency Medical Services organizations, and State Fire Training Academies.


FEMA Releases “Earthquake Safety” Guide

On March 2, FEMA released the new publication “Earthquake Safety at Home.”  This guide identifies why and where earthquakes might occur and how readers can “Prepare, Protect, Survive, Respond, Recover and Repair” from an earthquake.

 

The guide discusses wide-ranging steps that readers can take to adequately prepare and protect themselves, their family, and their belongings. The guide emphasizes the importance of developing family response plans, assembling earthquake disaster supplies, securing heavy objects and furniture, retrofitting a home, and more.

 

This publication also provides recommendations for post-earthquake recovery and repair that can help individuals and families resume regular activities as quickly as possible. To download a copy, visit the FEMA website.

FEMA Recruits National Advisory Council Membership

FEMA seeks qualified individuals for the 2020 National Advisory Council (NAC) membership cycle. FEMA is now accepting applications for up to 13 open positions in discipline areas to include, but not limited to, the following: standards setting and accrediting; non-elected local tribal official; emergency response provider and others. 

 

Applications for the FEMA NAC are due by March 13. Detailed instructions on how to apply can be found on the FEMA website.

FEMA Holds National Public Assistance Readiness Stand-Down

FEMA will hold a National Public Assistance Readiness Stand-Down on March 17-18.  This is a nationwide, all-hands event for Public Assistance personnel within FEMA operations.

 

The stand-down will be broadcast live from FEMA HQ from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. ET.  State and tribal partners are welcome to participate, especially if they are operating State-Led PA or have PA staff working directly from their offices.

FEMA Seeks Public Comment on NFIP Publication Regulations

On Feb. 12, FEMA published a Federal Register notice for public comments on two proposed changes to the Code of Federal Regulations regarding publication requirements for the National Flood Insurance Program. 

 

Comments for proposed changes are due no later than April 13. Detailed instruction on how to comment can be found on the Federal Register site.


FEMA Podcast Episode 67: Insights from a Mitigation Veteran

On this episode of the FEMA Podcast, listen to a discussion with Mark Carey about the principles of hazard mitigation and how support for mitigation has evolved over time. He also shares his own experience and insight as a disaster survivor.

 

Carey served as the FEMA Region 10 mitigation division director where he was responsible for the region’s hazard mitigation financial grant program, National Flood Insurance Program, Endangered Species Act compliance, Risk Analysis and Risk Reduction programs. He recently retired after 20 years of service with FEMA.

 

The FEMA podcast is an audio program series available to anyone interested in learning more about the Agency, hearing about innovation in the field of emergency management and listening to stories about communities and individuals recovering after disasters.
