Update on 2019 National Preparedness Month

Thank you to all of you who communicate preparedness messages in September and throughout the rest of the year through seasonal messaging campaigns. With National Preparedness Month just three weeks away, we wanted to give you a quick update on what we are preparing for the campaign this year. The 2019 theme is Prepared, Not Scared. Be Ready for Disasters. The campaign will feature PSAs and multimedia products around four weekly themes:

  • Week 1:  Sept 1-7           Save Early for Disaster Costs
  • Week 2:  Sept 8-14         Make a Plan to Prepare for Disasters
  • Week 3:  Sept 15-21       Teach Youth to Prepare for Disasters
  • Week 4:  Sept 22-30       Get Involved in Your Community’s Preparedness

Content has been loaded on the Ready.gov National Preparedness Month Toolkit webpage at www.Ready.gov/September. This is a soft launch, we are still uploading content. However, we want to advance some themes and materials to facilitate collaboration.

This year we would like you to share your activities and success stories hoping to amplify on Ready.gov and/or our social media channels. As such, we invite you to share with us a brief description of what you are planning for National Preparedness Month. Please drop us a note at FEMA-IGA.gov with the word NPM in the subject line.

Please help support FEMA’s mission of “Helping people before, during and after disasters.”

The 2018-2022 Strategic Plan creates a shared vision for the field of emergency management and sets an ambitious, yet achievable, path forward to unify and further professionalize emergency management across the country. We invite all of our stakeholders and partners to also adopt these priorities and join us in building a stronger Agency and a more prepared and resilient Nation.

Resilience Learning Session: Assessing the Losses Avoided from the Adoption of Building Codes: A Multi-Hazard Nationwide Summary

Assessing the Losses Avoided from the Adoption of Building Codes: A Multi-Hazard Nationwide Summary

NLS Infographic Webinar

You are invited to bring your lunch on Wednesday, August 7th from 12:00 to 1:00 pm and join your Resilience neighbors for a discussion on the Nationwide Building Code Losses Avoided Study. During the conversation, participants will learn about the study’s history and get a sneak peek into its outcome.

********Please MUTE your lines if joining on telecon.*******

Further Information on the Study:

Building Codes have become more widely adopted and more hazard-resistant over time.  Financial benefits are being realized by communities with significant hazard exposure who have been proactive in adopting and enforcing hazard-resistant building codes. This study will quantify these benefits for flood, hurricane wind, and seismic hazards using nationwide datasets with the ultimate findings simplified in terms of Average Annualized Losses.

The methodology for estimating the losses avoided from the adoption of hazard-resistant building codes has been developed and tested using a phased approach:

  • Phase 1: Local Study investigating losses avoided from hurricane wind and flood hazards code adoption in Charleston County, SC and seismic hazard code adoption in Salt Lake County, UT (complete);
  • Phase 2: Regional Study looked at FEMA Region IV and used it as a demonstration for how the methodology could be applied on a broader scale (complete);
  • Phase 3: Development of the National Methodology incorporating the lessons learned from Phases 1 and 2 (complete);
  • Phase 4: Performing the Nationwide Losses Avoided Study….

Phase 4 of this study is the culmination of nearly a decade’s worth of work. It is expected to be released in Q2 FY2020.
